Celebrate the American Spirit at the Battleship IOWA educational museum & attraction – the West Coast’s only Battleship open to the public and 2013 winner of the SSHSA Museum Ship of the Year. Considered one of the “Best Cool Exhibits to See with Your Kids”, your tour takes you on a journey through World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War to experience the life of a sailor on the lead ship of the last class of gunships. Walk the wood decks of a battleship and see areas such as the 16” guns, 5” guns, missile decks, bridge, mess areas, and the world famous Captain’s Cabin – with the only bathtub installed on a battleship for a President. Known as “The Battleship of Presidents”, IOWA has hosted three Presidents – Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush – and numerous dignitaries during almost 70 years of service. Battleship IOWA is located at the L.A. Waterfront, former home to the US Navy Battleship fleet prior to World War II and an area rich in maritime history. The Battleship IOWA museum is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Los Angeles’ New England fishing village since 1963, Ports O’ Call Village, located along the Port of Los Angeles’ Main Channel in San Pedro, is a unique seaside plaza that features souvenir and gift shops, along with popular and one-of-a-kind restaurants, tempting sweetshops, fish markets and quick-bite eateries.  In front of the village’s namesake Ports O’ Call Restaurant stands a statue modeled after the famous “Gorton’s Fisherman” in Gloucester, Mass.

With meandering cobblestone walkways weaving through the 15-acre destination, Ports O’ Call is also the departure point for narrated harbor tours, dinner dance cruises and whale watching excursions. Enjoy a relaxing lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants overlooking the harbor. Afterward, take a walk along the boardwalk and stop for a photo with the picturesque harbor backdrop.  Ports O’ Call Village is easy to reach and offers free parking, a rarity with most oceanfront venues.

Built in 1941, this “Streamlined Moderne” building was the base for an auto ferry which crossed the channel at regular intervals from San Pedro to a sister building on Terminal Island. It served navy personnel, fishing industry employees, and people who wished to avoid the long circuitous route through Wilmington and Industrial Long Beach. With the completion of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in 1963, ferry operations ceased, and the building became an overflow office for the Harbor Department.

Saved from deterioration by historically-minded citizens, the building has been beautifully restored, and now houses the largest maritime museum in California. This 75,000 square foot facility features more than 700 ship and boat models, a variety of navigational equipment and an operating amateur radio station. Exhibits include Native American artifacts relating to the sea, ship figureheads, maritime arts and crafts and an 18-foot scale model of the Titanic. Historical exhibits of the whaling industry, tall ships, commercial shipping, the Navy, the Merchant Marine and recreational sailing.
